Desperate Measures

10/14/2015

Fitzgerald, Steinbeck and Hemingway all drank, but they didn’t do it while they were writing.  The idea that they did is a myth.  And while two of them enjoyed the hobby so much that it almost certainly shortened their lives, they never claimed that it inspired them.  In writing, anyone who tries alcohol for inspiration is sure to find rubbish as the result when reviewed in the sober light of day.  I know this from experience.  Marijuana is a little different.  If one jots down some musings while enjoying a toke or two, there might be a note or two worth keeping in the A.M.

In Canada, Son of Pierre has quietly espoused  the legalization of pot since this almost interminable election began.  It goes with the nice hair and makes sense too for all the many oft-repeated reasons like medicinal pain relief, the ease of regulation and the inevitable luxury taxes.  King Trudeau the 1st should've decreed it done before the heir apparent was  ever born, but even he was most likely intimidated by the “Establishment” of the time.  The political Gorillas then were more impressive and commanding than those in places of power now, including the one currently occupying 24 Sussex Dr.  When they growled that it would end in the breakdown of society people listened, even though the fear was actually of lost productivity and profits.  It was widely believed that the effected masses of worker bees might turn into useless drones that wouldn’t produce enough honey to satisfy the greed of their masters.  Well, just compare alcohol use\abuse and try to add up the lost productivity caused by over-indulgences at the bar and the resulting “sick days”.  In contrast, pot has few negative physical after affects; I can attest to the veracity of that fact too.

Now it’s getting late in the day election wise and one fat little orange chipmunk is trying in vain to regain a  more or less inherited lead he has lost, by marginally modifying his position on pot, as the right wing leader lamely repeats his “stay the course\do nothing” agenda and continues to fear foreign female headgear.  And even now Toronto’s well known Ford brothers are planning a conservative love fest for him on Saturday night as a last resort.  It all reeks of ‘quiet desperation’ - to paraphrase Thoreau.

Perhaps there’s a coronation coming or maybe a restoration on probation.
